Skills That Matter: How Singing River Turned My Passion into a Career

Bryan Styron is nothing short of the definition of determined. He came to the apprenticeship wanting to transfer departments from food service to begin his career with patient care. He excelled through the program, always willing to put in the work. Bryan’s spirit and love for people radiated from him everywhere he went. Since being placed in the hospital, he picked up many overtime shifts in various departments and locations and discovered a strong interest for emergency medicine. He has since transferred to the ED and is on his way to continue to grow his career in this industry. Stories like Bryan’s are why we have the Academy, all that was needed was an opportunity at the right time. Here is how his story goes.

My name is Bryan Styron and I currently am a CNA/Tech with Singing River Health system. I currently am a Tech on 2NW in Ocean Springs hospital but beginning next week I will be a diversified Tech in the ER in Singing River Gulfport.

The Singing River healthcare academy caught my attention while I was a kitchen worker at Singing River Gulfport while I was helping take care of my elderly grandpa who recently passed away. And in that time while being in the apprenticeship program there I began learning things I did not know prior to joining the academy . And even as early as the first day in class I began learning things that I immediately began using at home to help take care of my grandpa . As the days and weeks went on under the supervision of Mrs., Carmen we began to learn lots and even in the skills lab practicing on manikins and our fellow classmates. By the end of the program I feel I have definitely become a new person and have made some lifelong friends not just my classmates and teacher but also my patients I have helped treat along this journey. Whether it was in the classroom or clinicals on 2W to the floor I am currently on I feel that the Apprenticeship program has definitely provided me with the necessary skills and training needed to becoming a successful CNA that I have become today. As I continue on this journey I feel the sky is the limit to eventually becoming an RN one day that not just myself but if the Academy were to have an RN program I feel that it would absolutely encourage more people not just CNAs but other LPNs to furthermore keep ok the education . I am already looking forward to returning to the Singing River Healthcare Academy in the future to learn more in this field. As going back to school can be a very scary and expensive decision with the Academy and the apprenticeship program if definitely has helped me financially to get where I wanted to be with the guaranteed job position upon completion of the course and no student debt! I am very grateful to EVERYONE that has partake in the Academy that has made this journey quite enjoyable. I wish other businesses take note as this could help motivate a lot into the workforce!

Thank you so much Singing River Healthcare Academy and the Apprenticeship Program!!
