PASCAGOULA, Miss. (WLOX) – It’s a moment nursing students in the Singing River Health Care Academy have been working toward.
Tuesday evening at the Pascagoula Performing Arts Center, 120 students graduated, 20 of those being Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs).
Mississippi’s first-ever medical apprenticeship program was a time for students to get some hands-on experience in the field, something that was challenging at first.
“I was a little nervous because going to nursing school was a little hard, but we had a lot of support throughout the program,” one graduate said. “It started off challenging because we didn’t know what we were doing but it was a lot of hands-on and a lot of help from our instructors. They are always there and ready to help whenever we need it so it was good. It was easy once we got into it.”
It was an opportunity the graduates said played a major role for them when it came to balancing life and school.
“Throughout life, you get off track and I’m thankful Singing River had this program, and because of it I was able to get out of work and go to school while being able to take care of my family,” one graduate said.
As the graduates look back on what they accomplished, they encourage others to take advantage of the program because it could help them re-discover their love of science.
“I did phlebotomy in the past and I want to go back out there because I love science and love being in the lab. This program with Singing River really helped me,” one graduate said. “I’m very excited. Next after this, I want to continue my career, graduate with my MLT degree, and continue to work at Singing River.”
