MDES Workforce Services Facilitates Rapid Employment for U.S. Army Veteran

In August 2025, U.S. Army Veteran Amari Horton visited the Meridian WIN Job Center seeking immediate employment to support his wife and three daughters. Through the Mississippi Department of Employment Security’s (MDES) Workforce Services and the Jobs for Veterans State Grant (JVSG) program, he received targeted, individualized assistance.

Following eligibility determination, Amari was referred to MDES Veteran Employment Coordinator (VEC) LaKisha Davis for intensive services. The VEC conducted a detailed assessment of Amari’s military and civilian experience, guided him through a skills evaluation, and worked with him to develop an Individual Employment Plan (IEP) focused on both immediate job placement and long-term career goals.

As part of MDES’s employer engagement efforts, the VEC contacted the Toomsuba location of Love’s Travel Stops, leveraging a connection made at a recent job fair. After reviewing Amari’s qualifications, the store manager invited him for a same-day interview.

With guidance from MDES staff, Amari attended the interview, was offered a position on the spot with excellent pay and benefits, and began orientation that afternoon.

Days later, Amari expressed his appreciation for the support provided. The store manager also contacted MDES to praise his performance and request additional veteran referrals.

This case reflects the effectiveness of MDES Workforce Services in connecting veterans with employers through personalized support, strategic employer outreach, and strong community partnerships.
