In 2024, U.S. Army Veteran La Tasha Powell began working with the Mississippi Department of Employment Security (MDES) through a referral from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) program. After establishing eligibility at the Pascagoula WIN Job Center, she was connected with Veteran Employment Coordinator (VEC), Mr Chris Kaster, for individualized career services under the Jobs for Veterans State Grant (JVSG) program.
During their initial consultation, the VEC conducted a comprehensive assessment of La Tasha’s skills, employment interests, and long-term career goals. Despite facing personal and professional challenges, including ongoing health issues, a recent divorce, and reentering the workforce after time as a stay-at-home parent, La Tasha demonstrated determination to build a new path forward.
Together, they developed an Individual Employment Plan focused on bookkeeping and financial services. The VEC provided tailored support including resume development, labor market research, job application assistance, and connections to employers such as Intuit and H&R Block. Through this guidance, La Tasha secured seasonal employment with Intuit in late 2024, where she gained valuable experience, industry training, and renewed confidence in her professional abilities.
Building on that foundation, La Tasha has since transformed her experience into a personal success story. In 2025, she launched her own business specializing in tax preparation and notary services, named in honor of her mother and grandmother. Her company reflects both her professional growth and her commitment to serving her community.
La Tasha credits her work with the MDES VEC and the JVSG program as key to helping her rediscover her purpose, gain relevant experience, and transition from job seeker to business owner. Her journey demonstrates the long-term impact of veteran-focused employment services that empower individuals to achieve independence, stability, and success beyond traditional employment.
