Pamela Cummings, a U.S. Navy veteran, embarked on a new journey with the Mississippi Department of Employment Security (MDES) through the Veteran Readiness and Employment Program. Referred by the Veterans Administration, Pamela connected with Disabled Veterans Outreach Program (DVOP) Specialist, Christopher Kaster, on March 7, 2024, at the Gulfport WIN Job Center. Driven by a desire to quickly find employment in her preferred fields of education or health counseling, Pamela remained open to exploring new opportunities.
Recognizing her wealth of transferable skills from both her military service and prior employment, the DVOP Specialist promptly conducted an assessment and developed a tailored Individual Employment Plan (IEP) to position her for success. Pamela’s eagerness and readiness to re-enter the workforce were matched with clear goals, strategic job search locations, and an intensive job application process.
During their sessions, Christopher provided invaluable guidance, assisting her in refining her resume and tailoring job applications for potential employers. Pamela was also encouraged to aggressively pursue opportunities, maximizing her potential by utilizing various job search platforms. She was introduced to the Governor’s Military and Civilian Job Fair in Biloxi and
urged to attend on April 2, 2024.
Despite her enthusiasm and persistence, Pamela experienced moments of discouragement. By May 2024, she accepted a part-time role with the Harrison County School System, finding joy in working with children, though still aiming for a more permanent career opportunity.
Christopher continued to provide support, following up with Pamela in July and August 2024. He highlighted new job openings on the Mississippi State Personnel Board website that aligned with her career aspirations. Although she initially faced rejection from the Mississippi Vocational Rehabilitation Services, Pamela’s perseverance paid off. Two weeks later, she was offered the
very role she had been eyeing.
On September 3, 2024, Pamela began her new role as a Vocational Rehabilitation Specialist, earning $41,000 annually. Thrilled with this opportunity, Pamela’s journey exemplifies the power of persistence, preparation, and resilience.
Her story serves as a reminder that even when the path seems uncertain, staying committed to the process can lead to success. With the right plan, determination, and support, opportunities will come.
